Roses

This post will be Rose themed which seems very fitting because in just a few days, floats decorated with roses and other delightful floral will be parading down the block. Living in Pasadena is rather exciting this time of year, to be in the middle of all the Tournament of Rose Parade celebration really makes one feel that another new year has officially begun. So in keeping this rose theme, I wanted to share this headband I designed especially for my grandmother as a christmas gift. It's called Gloria, of course, and she loved it! I also noticed John Galliano has a lot of rose hair pieces in his Spring 2010 collection and I came across this design which looks very similar to the Crows Nest clip we have for sale. I can't wait for the new year when I can put all my new design ideas in to motion and they can be paraded around top the heads of elegant customers.

Fall/Winter Style Prediction-1920s/30s Vaudville

Accessories: Dusty looking roses, lace, rubies, black feathers, black tool, harem scarves and baubles. Strap high heels. Pearls!

Make-up: Rosie, round cheeks with peach or strawberry colored blush. Smokey eyes, "glossy", puckered lips in fruity colors like raspberry and melon. DON'T thin the brows. Have them nice and groomed and naturally shaped. This will keep the look modern and not costume like. For the more daring... chop your long, wavy locks to a chic, fun bob with bangs. Keep it wispy and natural colored. Don't go goth black or ronald mc donald red please! unless you're a super model gracing the cover of Vogue.

How did you get started with your company?

I was at a popular fashion apparel store and saw a really cute feather headband. When I picked it up to try it on, I noticed it was practically falling apart with glue showing all over it and way over priced. So I decided to design and create my own headband that wouldn't fall apart. My friends saw my design and encouraged me to make more headbands and that's when I decided to opened my online indie boutique.

Two Words...Two Tone.

One of my prized fashion possessions are my two toned saddle shoes. Years ago I was on the hunt for a pair and I couldn't find nice looking ones anywhere! I just wanted some nice normal non fancy saddle shoes. My search ended when I came across the window of Stride Rite (kid's shoe store) in Santa Barbara. Their they were, my lovely little saddle shoes that fit my size 5 and a half feet. I don't wear them too much, only once and a while, because I don't want them to get too worn out. I wore them two weeks ago when I acted in a short for tkikmania.com and that's when it hit me...I LOVE these shoes! I want to bring two tones back! It doesn't look like I'll have to try very hard. The LA based fashion line Wren has their models sporting them and my latest LOOKBOOK post was inspired by Wren's fall 2009 collection. Very french school girl and very cute.

Rooney Is Our Valentine

Paula Deen made such a pretty cake on the Food network the other night so we had to try it out. It's totally a Valentines Day cake. I highly recommend baking this cake if your a strawberry shortcake fanatic.
The cake also goes well with our Valentines Day Tree!

"Simply Delicious Strawberry Cake"

1 (18.25-ounce) box white cake mix
1 (3-ounce) box strawberry flavored instant gelatin
1 (10-ounce) package frozen strawberries in syrup, thawed and pureed
4 large eggs
1/2cup vegetable oil
1/4cup water
Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe follows)
Garnish: sliced fresh strawberries

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly grease 2 round 9-inch cake pans.

In a large bowl, combine cake mix and gelatin. Add pureed strawberries, eggs, oil, and water; beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Pour into prepared pans, and bake for 20 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes. Remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks. Spread Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting in between layers and on top and sides of cake. Garnish with sliced fresh strawberries, if desired.

Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting
Makes about 4 cups

1/4cup butter, softened
1 (8-ounce) package cream sheese,m softened
1 (10-ounce) package frozen strawberries in syrup, thawed and pureed
1/2teaspoon strawberry extract
7 cups confectioners' sugar

In a large bowl, beat butter and cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Beat in 1/4 cup strawberry puree, reserving remaining for another use. Beat in extract. Gradually add confectioners' sugar, beating until smooth.

Note: For pinker frosting, add 2 to 3 drops of red food coloring to frosting.

Do I dare say? ok, I will. It Looks like Karl Lagerfeld and I are on the same wave length for spring. Black and white flowers are all the rage for Spring 2009 according to Chanel. Take a look at these beautiful head pieces created for the Spring 2009 Chanel show, made from paper. They look priceless so I'm sure they cost a lot. Well unless your rich and crazy, I doubt you'll be able to strut down Silverlake blvd. wearing a Chanel head piece and pull the look off. So good thing Helena Markos just happens to have some designs that carry over the black and white flower idea in a more affordable and sensible way.

Have you ever seen a pair of shoes like this!? The company that created this awesome pair of shoes is based in Australia. Pendragon Shoes makes all kinds of designs resembling footwear of the fairy folk. These shoes would make a great match with any one of our headbands. I gotta get me a pair!

Meadowlarks

Our latest LOOKBOOK post was inspired by the song Meadowlarks from a band named Fleet Foxes. David got their album and it's amazing. They don't have the song Meadowlarks on their myspace, so guess what that means...yep, you have to go and GET IT! It will make your heart melt.

We're also digging the band Arthur & Yu. Both bands are from Seattle Washington. What's with Seattle? we love it there and the music always rocks! It must be all the trees...

Photoshoot: The Lady Day Collection

Helena Markos Boutique conducted a photo shoot for The Lady Day Collection. Thanks to our beautiful model Natalie Romero , our visionary photographer David Voorhees, and our modish stylist Teri Hendrich, we had an afternoon of artistry at it's finest.

With the warm socal sun peeking through the pines, oak leaves rustling beneath our feet, the Helena Markos crew set off on a mini adventure to find the perfect setting for each piece that was photographed. We thank Gaia no one fell in to the pond or scraped their knee on some rocks!

During the shoot, there were a few passerby-ers whom we greeted delightfully, including two nice ladies on a stroll who stopped for just a moment to admire our headbands saying how cute they were!

In the last picture below, Teri is wearing the Deutscher Girl headband, I'm wearing one of my favorites, the Ophilea headdress, and Natalie wears the Irena headband.
